Karen has 25 years experience in HE, supporting both learning and teaching and research. An educational researcher by background Karen provides strategic direction for the Research Excellence Training (RET) provision at the University of York. Working to support the University’s Research and Enterprise Strategies the RET team co-ordinate and deliver training for doctoral students, early career researchers, doctoral supervisors and Principal Investigators and professional support staff aligned to research. Responsibilities include:

Karen has a PhD in Education, has published widely on Assessment, is a trained coach and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is an active member of the Researchers14 group focussed on research staff development and has strong links with Advance HE, Vitae and UKCGE. The second edition of 'Innovative Assessment in Higher Education: a handbook for academic practitioners ' was released in May 2019.

  • Outlining the University of York Enterprise Fellowship programme, designed to support the translation of research into business ideas through strategic investment in research-talent and a commitment to developing Knowledge Exchange (KE)
  • Exploring how the one-year programme provides support and time for researchers to develop skills, ideas and enhance commercial awareness for external engagement through forming partnerships with key stakeholders to spin-out ideas
  • Developing tailored modules and a mentoring programme to support fellows in their development
  • Providing a programme through which researchers can explore big societal questions and accelerate their career
